HMS SLINGER'S SHIPS BADGE

"DEBELLARE SUPERBOS"

THE APPROVED DESIGN

The official design approved for the aircraft carrier 'SLINGER' - designed by Sir Arthur Cochrane and approved as an Admiralty Sealed Pattern on September 1st 1943. The approved motto, translates as "To overcome the proud "

An alternative motto 'Fight proudly to the end' was suggested by the carrier's officers but was accepted in the final design.

OTHER VERSIONS OF THE BADGE

The  design featured above was either designed by the officers of the escort carrier prior to the authorised badge being approved or was used onboard the original HMS SLINGER, a seaplane catapult trials ship in 1918/19.

A felt pennant made in the U.S. probably by her builders Willamette Iron & Steel, Portland, Oregon.  This suggests that the unofficial design was in common use.

Another variation on the unofficial badge adopted by the second 'SLINGER' - it seems odd that this should be used since an official badge had been in existence for the past two years/

The next HMS SLINGER

The official Ship's badge passed to Landing Ship Tank 3510 when she became the third HMS Slinger in 1947 when a series of LSTs were renamed.
