Avenger in FAA service

(1/1)

Spitfire Addict:
Was the Avenger TBM -1c used by the FAA? about which years was it in service?
Cheers

PhiloNauticus:

Yes, the TBM-1c was used in large numbers by the FAA from Dec 1943 onwards; most were withdrawn from service in late 1945 at war's end; looks like the last in service was in late 1946.    The later TBM-3 was used 1953-58

Yes, the Avenger TBF 1C was in service with the FAA:

Serial number batch FN75O to FN949 Mixed IB/IC - no breakdown of which were which. Originally named Tarpon I then Avenger I.

Serial number batch JZ101 - 746 - JZ301-634 were 1Cs - These were named as Avenger IIs in FAA service.

Thanks gents,
From what I understand the 1c had the smaller paddle blade prop, whereas the prop on the TBM 3 was similar to that used by the F4U 1d, 13.1" in diameter I believe. I have two kits to build and both will be in FAA livery, one for the Pacific Fleet and the other for ops during D-Day period, but not sure if it is a 1c because of the designation of Avenger Mk 1 and it's coincidence with the Grumman designation.
Cheers
