Combined Operations unofficial mystery badge
« on: 20 December 2015 12:18:09 pm »

Can anyone shed any light on whose badge this was?

The Combined Military Services Museum in Maldon, Essex http://www.cmsm.co.uk/ has an unidentified badge in its possession a handmade, anonymous badge with no clues as to its relevant unit. Any help in solving the mystery would be gratefully received. :)

Hi spooks1959 ,

Interesting badge.

I have copied it and I will show some friends on a Commando website.

Intriguing! Clearly naval in origin (naval crown, use of rope and navy-blue background). What draws together an Allied Navy, the British Combined Operations badge and a snail, during or shortly after WW2? I’ve seen nothing like it before and could find nothing on the Internet. It’s likely a locally made, unofficial, badge which will be very difficult, if not impossible, to trace.

However, it’s interesting to note that in 1975 the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) used a derivative of the British Combined Operations badge for their landing craft squadrons described below.

"RAN Amphibious Squadron Insignia The first official use of squadron insignia for RAN amphibious vessels was instituted c.1975 when landing craft of the First Australian Heavy Landing Craft Squadron (AUSLANCRON ONE) adopted a derivative of the British combined operations badge as its motif. The badge was affixed to the funnels of the Balikpapan class landing craft heavy and later to the heavy lift ship HMAS Tobruk (II). The device comprised a navy-blue field with a naval crown above an anchor, superimposed with crossed swords and a kangaroo ‘in flight’ all picked out in red."

Staying with the RAN, but going back to the post war period "HMAS Kimbla, a boom defence vessel commissioned on 26 March 1956, had the distinction of being the last vessel in the RAN to use a reciprocating steam engine as a form of propulsion. Capable of achieving only 10 knots she was affectionately dubbed the ‘snail’ and it was this motif that she adopted as her distinctive funnel insignia during her twilight years. Kimbla decommissioned on 15 February 1985 having steamed an arduous 363,038 nautical miles.”

Was there a precedent to draw on when they adopted the snail in the 1970/80s? It’s a tenuous link but perhaps worth being aware of in the background.

Hi Folks,

One very plausible explanation has been put forward by a colleague in another forum. He thinks the snail is a dead give away, and it is an unofficial badge for the NIARTDA Unit.

Never heard of it.... Translating this Joint Service Acronym gives you:-

Not In A Rush To Do Anything

Many thanks to Ed at http://edbuscall.webs.com/

Similar to the ROMFT badge -ROMFT stands for Roll On My First Twelve - a novelty badge dreamt up by some sailor with not enough to do....

Hi all,

It is a 'home made' effort but proving hard to track down.

I contacted the Museum for any additional information and this email has just arrived:

Hi thanks for you email with regard to the ship's badge, all I have is the
photograph.

So it may be a Landing Craft Squadron?

The hunt continues.

I would tend to agree with the comments above - it is likely to be an unofficial badge. I believe that it was not unusual for ships/units who did not have a badge to create their own.  The combined ops and snail would suggest a landing craft.

Incidentally, I always knew ROMFT as = Roll on my f*****g time...

Hi,

No success in searching for the origin of the Snail.

But it is so unusual I have included it into my own research. It does have the Combined Operations badge so my thoughts are that it is either a Landing Craft or a Commando Troop unofficial emblem. See attached Fox Commando Xmas card.

I try, if possible to have the original version and a tidied up version. See attached.

The only Snail insignia I have found is HMAS Kimbla which has a Yellow Snail on the funnel. See attached.

Greetings,
As I am a new member of this forum, I would like to introduce myself, I have a vast collection of ships badges , RN. and Commonwealth, and I enjoy looking at unofficial badges and trying to get into the mindset of the person who designed the unofficial badge, so I am aware of the Snail badge  posted but would if possible like to see more enquiries about unofficial badges,
Thanks Tom
