My fathers medals

(1/1)

Smudger:
First of all thanks for allowing me to join this forum.  I have recently inherited me fathers medals from my mother on the edges is inscribed P/SSX 832607 E Smith AB RN I would like to find out what this means.  My father was DE Smith so why was the D missing.  Would be grateful for any help.

PhiloNauticus:
This is his service number.   It is made up of

P = shows that Portsmouth was his Port Division, for welfare, drafting etc
SS - Seaman or Stoker
X = on the post-1925 pay scale
832607 = service number

AB - Able Seaman

There is no significance in a missing initial - it is not unknown. It probably means that when the forms were filled in, your fathers name was one in a list, and the person completing the details accidentally missed out the first letter

James_harvey:
SS Service number is short Service and is 5 years plus 7 in reserves
