RN R Class submarine
« on: 26 May 2021 02:20:33 pm »

The R Class submarine was armed with 6, 18 inch torpedo tubes and designed for high underwater speed as a primarily anti submarine platform. I have just seen on Wikipedia that, according to that site, some R Class boats had their torpedo tubes upgraded to 21 inch. This seems unlikely to me, does anyone have any information on this?

Like you, I would doubt this - apart from a couple retained for training, the R boats had a very short service life.  Neither Akermann (Encyclopedia of British Submarines) or Conway's mention any armament changes

Agreed, and fitting 6, 21 inch tubes in a submarine of 500 tons submerged displacement would be a big ask back then.
