HMS Asbury
« on: 05 December 2021 10:03:36 pm »

Good evening groovy gang, hoping somebody comes up trumps here. Before we go any further, I already have my Dad's naval service docs and they DO NOT SHOW ANY SHIPS. In 1943 my dad, a bunts, sailed to New York aboard HMT Queen Mary. I know this because my cousin found his immigration record. It appears he was discharged from the ship and did not make the return trip when she returned to Gourock a fortnight later. Having done a bit of digging I am of the opinion that he must have sailed to the USA to join HMS Asbury, the shore establishment in New Jersey. Presumably he was to join one of the ships being readied for acceptance by the RN that were being built or refitted in US yards. Now the question...did Asbury have any personnel records of ratings billeted there, or where they were later drafted to?
