Watch keeping WW2 destroyer detailed explanation sought

I would be interested to receive a detailed explanation of watch keeping on a destroyer with a complement of approximately 180 men under the various conditions met in wartime.
I've read various online online sources but I can't get a handle on how to visualise what actually happened in practice at various points of the day and under what combat conditions.
Did watches do 4 on 4 off, 4 on 8 off as a matter of routine?
Of particular confusion what happened during the first dog and last dog watch.
Who was involved and indeed what was involved.
As always grateful for your forbearance and help.
