ROYAL ARTHUR – reception for new entries/ initial training – Skegness (the Butlins holiday camp)
VALKYRIE – shore base at Douglas, Isle of Man; radar training establishment
CAROLINE –  shore base at Belfast
AVALON – Royal Canadian Navy shore base at St John’s Newfoundland
CANADA – RN shore base at Halifax, Nova Scotia
EAGLET – RN shore base at Liverpool
LANKA – RN shore base at Colombo, Ceylon (Sri Lanka)
TYNE – depot ship – see: https://uboat.net/allies/warships/ship/7287.html
GOLDEN HIND – shore base at Sydney, Australia
VICTORY III  and VICTORY – shore base at Portsmouth
COLLINGWOOD – shore base at Fareham

The shore bases and also HMS Tyne, were responsible for administrative duties – pay and paperwork mainly – that the small ships could not do.  Your father would not have actually served there, they were the 'parent' establishment.

His  two ships were Chilliwack and Findhorn

Chilliwack was a Flower class corvette

Findhorn was a River class frigate –

In regard to my father's service record-Ships served on in WW2. My father, Norman Charles Lock served, as Radar operator, on Royal navy ships and a Canadian Royal navy ship, HMCS Chilliwack.

But I found out that some of the names are not ships but are land bases. I think Collingswood is one and I think there was one in the former Ceylon. I would be interested in some more information about the land bases if possible.

Thank you.

Hopefully the names that did not fit in last scan are on this one. I turned it the other way round. I had to reduce the size, causing names not to fit on the photo.

In regard to Royal Arthur Class 207 and Class members. The rear of the photo with Class members names. I think this has scanned to be 959K.

Rear of photo. Royal Arthur Class 207.
Sorry

It is saying the file (rear of photo) is too large.  It is actually about the same as the front of the photo.  I may try again some time. Do not understand.

My father, Norman Lock is 6th from your left in the rear row as you look at the photo.
There seems to be about 29 names on the rear of the photo. Some of the writing takes a lot to work out. But some clear ones are. W Robinson, Birmingham. Walter Potts, Macclesfield. FJ Mullett Birmingham.

My father, Norman Charles Lock, was in the Royal Navy in WW2 from 1942 to 1946. I have a photo of Royal Arthur Class 207. Other Class members of Class 207 have put their names on the rear of the photo.

It would be nice to put names to faces in the Class 207 photo with the 80th Anniversary of end of WW2 in 2025. My father was born in February 2024 and died in November 2021. Does anyone know who the other 207 Class members are. My father went on to receive the Atlantic star and Burma star. Norman was a radar operator and served on a Canadian war ship, HMCS Chilliwack (For the British Royal navy) at one stage of the war. Protecting shipping in the Atlantic. Norman also served in the Pacific later in the WW2.

Thankyou

Hi

I'm trying to find out what the following means on my Great Grandfathers Service Record.

K. C. (No. 15214) Issued 7/12/21

My GG joined in 1904 and was Invalided out in 1920. He was an Officers Steward.

Thanks in advance.

During World War 2 my father, William Jesse Moore, was a Colour Sergeant in the Royal Marines
From September 1943 to August 1944 he was listed as Portsmouth Division and the next line on his service record is 18 August – 4 November: HBL (which I believe is Home Based Ledger), RH Tiger Group.
From 5 November he is listed as Braganza, which I take to be HMS Braganza, the shore base in Bombay and he was there until 16 January 1946.  It sounds a fairly hellish posting.  There were several service deaths from illness; RM O’Halloran died of heat stroke in June 1945, although he was only 36 years old; and I know my father caught malaria there and from then on had a lifelong hatred of eating rice!
Can anyone tell me what RH Tiger Group means?
When he is listed as posted to Braganza would that mean he is actually in India, or could he be in transit to this posting, or is the RH Tiger Group his movement from the UK to Bombay?
Thanks for your help, Arthur

Hello, I’m new to the forum and I’m hoping somebody can help.  I have searched the forum before posting this, but I can’t see to find the answers.
My friend recently passed away and I would like to find out more about his discharge from the Royal Navy in the 1950’s.  He was discharged for homosexuality and I understand he had a ‘choice’ of a custodial sentence, or treatment, and I believe he chose the latter to avoid bringing shame on his mother.
The attached ‘Remarks’ section of his records detail the SNLR, but I can’t find out what any of the other terms and abbreviations are.  I would be very grateful if somebody can advise!

Hello,

I am new here and am doing some research for a friend of mine's grandad who served in WW2. I am fairly familiar wit military records but am wondering how to view which ships they served on, is this purely via their service record?
Any help would be much appreciated, as I say RN records are fairly unfamiliar.
