Title: Identifying a name from service number
Post by: jusgrim on 29 December 2012 09:19:52 am
Hello, does anyone have any suggestions on how I might be able to put a name to a WW2 service number if the RN service number and town of residence is all I have? I've searched ancestry to no avail so far.

The number I'm looking up is LX23238, town Bridgewater.

Thanks

Justin

Hi Justin,
You would most likely need to contact the National Archives but the following may help.
http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/royal_navy.html (http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/royal_navy.html)
As for the number:
Officers Cooks and Stewards:
UPPER PAY SCALE PRE 25th October 1925
[Those already serving]
L......to L15101.

LOWER PAY SCALE POST 25th October 1925
[Those joining on or after this date]
LX commencing with 20001
