Title: H.F.B. YUILL
Post by: BargeBoy on 18 May 2020 09:18:03 am
Good morning everyone. As you can see, I am new to this forum, but very excited by it and the mutual support that it offers. My main reason for joining is that I had three members of my family who served during WW2 - two in the RN and 1 in the RNVR. I know some information about them but not much and hope that you might be able to help/advise me. this post is to cover my first relation. his service is a real mystery. This is all I know:

Harold Francis Bertie YUILL
Born 1925. Died 2011.
Said he was at HMS Ganges.
Said he served on HMS Zephyr.
I have a photo of him and his (black) cap just has "HMS" on it.

Any thoughts please?

Thank you.
Stephen.

Get a copy of his Service Record: this will show when where etc. he served.  When you have a copy, you can post the details and people will help you unscramble it

see: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/request-records-of-deceased-service-personnel

or elsewhere on this site

Thank you Philo - will do. I guess that is the same for my other men (another RN and a Lieutenant in the RNVR)?
Regards.
Stephen.

If he was a rating then yes: if an officer, then you should be able to trace his career in contemporary Navy Lists.  What was the name of the RNVR Lieut?

Hi - it was Arthur Rowland EMMETT. Ships he mentioned were HMS Onetos, Ronso and Oystermouth Castle.
Regards.

From the Navy Lists of the time:

Arthur Roland Emmett
Commissioned 11 March 1940 as Temporary Lieutenant RNVR
Mar 1940 : HMS Watchful [Parent establishment, Great Yarmouth]
1 July 1940: HMS Lynx [naval establishment, Dover]  “For Training”
4 April 1941:  HMS Ronso (in command)
21 August 1943: HMS Sluga (in command)
15 March 1945: HMS Boscawen (naval establishment, Portland/Poole)

Ronso was a former  Grimsby trawler, converted to a Minesweeper; she was based at Dover 1941-42
Sulga was a former Whaling ship, converted to a Minesweeper; I am not sure where she was based 1943-44
You mentioned Onetos and Oystermouth Castle – not shown, but may well have been when he was training

Sorry - I meant to ask, would Arthur EMMETT have been entitled to any medals?

He would certainly qualify for the 1939-45 Star and the War Medal 1939-45 and probably the Atlantic Star

Thank you Philo. I don't think he ever claimed them. Is there a way to do that now or is it too late?
Regards.
Stephen.

You should contact the Medal Office and check to see what medals are due, and whether they have been claimed or not.  I believe there is a form to be completed.
Details:
MOD Medal Office
Innsworth House
Imjin Barracks,
Gloucester,
GL3 1HW.

Tel: 0800 085 3600

I have now received H.F.B. Yuill's service record. It would appear from one of the documents that he was discharged. However, I don't understand the reason. Is anyone able to help me please?
Thank you.
Stephen.

It says Invalided 29/8/45 amended to 31/8/45

Invalided means discharged due to illness

The other scribble next to that looks like Nil FSL (final service leave) : I cannot say what the rest of the scribble says, but it is probably a document reference

I don't suppose by any chance anyone has a copy of HMS Zephyr's log do they?

Thank you.
Stephen.
