Title: Service number
Post by: Jimmanning on 03 December 2012 02:25:17 pm
Hi,
My great uncles service number was P/MX.52387. Could anyone tell me what the letters mean please? He was a cook seaman aboard HMS Wivern and died following an attack in 1940.

Thinks.

P - the homeport letter, in this case indicating Portsmouth
M- branch letter; in this case 'miscellaneous'; this covered a wide range of branches, including artificers, carpenters, SBA's, cooks and stewards etc etc
X - pay scale; in this case post-1925 scale

Hope this helps
