Title: Is this a correct Service Number
Post by: Capt Mike on 29 October 2014 04:27:01 pm
I am trying to help a friend trace his family history, starting with his father, who separated from the family very soon after the birth of my friend.  On his marriage certificate he is shown as "A.B No 8 X 565078 HM Navy General Labourer".  The leading "8" is difficult to read and could be either an "8", or a "J".  Can anyone confirm whether or not the leading letter, be it an "8"or a"J", is relevant and if so, which it is more likely to be?

It will be a J, so that the correct number would be: JX/565078

Hi,

If that number belongs to a AB Henry Austen it is correct.
