Title: Identifying Medal codes
Post by: miroam on 24 June 2014 09:51:46 am
My late brother in law served on the Minesweeper HMS Steadfast and was awarded the 1939-45, The  Atlantic and war medals. I believe he was on the Steadfast at the Normandy landings on the Steadfast

Under the heading of F. and C. which relates to the France and German medal there was entered the capital 'R' .

Could anyone please explain what this 'R' means or indicates in relation to his service on the Steadfast and his other medals.

Thank you

Hi Michael,

I was just browsing the naval medal records at the National Archives and it was mentioned on the page that:

"The letter 'R' over a code can signify that an application for that medal was reviewed and refused."

Here is the link to the page:http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/merchant-seamen-medals-ww2.htm

Hope that helps on some way.

Good Luck,

Adam.
