The Navy List is a very confusing document for searching. For example, in the first section, the index alphabetically lists names as surname followed by initials, and the unit on which they are serving (sometimes marked as indexed in this section but not appearing in the ships' listing). In the promotions listings, they are by Christian names followed by surname in date of promotion order. And in the listing for individual ships and establishments by initials followed by surname. Note that mistakes did creep in (and out); for example, men from Commonwealth nations are often mistakenly listed as RNVR, but are corrected to RANVR, RCNVR or FNZNVR in later editions.
