WW2 RN rating 1942 travel to first ship—by what route and means?

How would a rating on completion of his training in the UK join his first ship based at a naval base in a foreign country?

By way of background service record notes:

OSPREY Portland Naval Base 24 Jan 42 to 11 March 42

LANKA (Isis) Colombo Naval Base WW2 12 March to 13 Aug

Grateful to receive the input and advice from forum members.

He would have taken passage in a ship going to Colombo - as he was evidently retained on the books of Osprey for the purposes of pay until he arrived, this was most likely to have been a troop transport
