Re: STAG - this was the name of the base at Port Said, Egypt. I would suggest that Sagitta was based there – STAG was probably responsible for administering pay and paperwork. All the reference means is that Sagitta had raised a Form S161 advising that he had been promoted, so his pay would have to be adjusted accordingly. SD – Unsure, but could mean Submarine Detector Instructor – i.e. he had qualified to train people. This would fit with his time at NIMROD. I would imagine that with the war coming to an end, the courses would have been brought an end. SAGITTA – was built in 1908 and did indeed see service in WW1 but was again brought back into naval use in WW2 |

i'm new to this .i'm looking for help with my dads naval records from the war . he told us very little about his time in the navy and it has only been recently that i managed to obtain records . this has caused me all kinds of confusion .he seems to have moved around a lot seldom in 1 plaice for more than a couple of months . but all the "ships" he was on appear to be land based and there is frankly little or no information on them .so any help would be much appreciated.

hi
thanks for that .so s161 is when you get promoted but according to the sheet i was sent ,he was only promoted once on 7/12/43 and that when he was posted to hms sagitta ,but the written record say stag . that according to the time line he never went to ?if they where not promotions but for achievements like training again nothing appears on his record.in fact that whole page is blank nothing no height or anything that would tell you what he looked like .there are no medals or achievements listed .the s161 for nimrod was when he left .so i can only guess that he passed a course before going to osprey . but i have looked it up and they say that those particular bases were for NCO or officers he was neither according to the records he was an able seaman .i get more confused the more i look . any help on HMS SAGITTA as i can find very little just the name crops up .according to the official record it was out of service in 1918 but then says may have been in ww2 .not helpful at all . only found 1 picture. thanks |

Hi Everyone
My grandfather served aboard the ROyal Navy Destroyer HMS St Marys during World War II. She escorted the minelaying squadrons int he North Sea, North Atlantic and Denmark Straights and she also acted as an escort for convoys. I have been in touch with the family of one of her commanding officers but I would like to know more about the crew. My grandfather had some good friends aboard ship and I am interested in obtaining a crew list. Can anyone tell me where I might be able to find the Crew List for her? Thank you |

Hello everyone
I am working on the biography of a submarine commander from my city, he was in charge of U-13. In his KTB, it is recorded that on November 21, 1939, he fired a torpedo at what he believed to be a destroyer, identifying its silhouette as a V&W-class destroyer. The attack took place at a distance of over 3,500 meters in the Firth of Forth area at approximately 03:15 AM. The target was heading into deep waters. The torpedo detonated after running for 4 minutes and 15 seconds. Through the hydrophone, they heard multiple turbines approaching in the direction of the attacked vessel. For safety reasons, they withdrew from the area while submerged and were not counterattack If you have any information about what might have happened or whether any ship was damaged in that area on that day, I would be very grateful. Kind regards from Argentina |

British Pacific Fleet goes into action against Japanese. From The Advertiser, Saturday 31st March 1945.
Some extracts from the article. Aircraft Carrier Illustrious is participating. The British carrier forces are under the command of R-Adml. Sir Philip Vian, known as "Vian of the Cossack," for his rescue of British prisoners from the hell ship Altmark. Three of the five types of planes used by the carrier force are the American Hellcat and Corsair fighter-bombers and the Avenger, torpedo-bomber, all of which have been tried and proved in most carrier strikes in the Pacific war. In addition, they carry British Seafire fighters, the carrier-borne version of the latest Spitfire, armed with two 20 mm. cannon and four machine-guns. The second British aircraft carried is the Firefly, the most heavily armed fighter of the Royal Navy. Armed with four 20 mm. cannon and rocket-firing devices, it carries terrific firepower for knocking out land strong posts and gun positions. I’m researching a relative who served in the Royal Navy and would love to learn more about his service history. Unfortunately, I only have limited details, including his name and approximate years of service. Could anyone advise on the best way to find records or share insights on common postings during that time? Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
