Thank you for putting this together. My late father Ronald Histed was a sailor on her straight after completing his training at HMS Ganges. He joined the ship in either Belfast or the Clyde before her voyage to Durban in 1945 for a refit. During the voyage it only had one biplane (he called it a Tigermoth) on board and they received the Hellcats in Durban. He also told me about the Hellcat going over the side of the ship in Ceylon where the pilot died when it skipped the arrestor wire. Immediately afterwards, the entire squadron was put up in the air to ensure future pilot confidence. Dave Dixon’s photograph of the ship sailing from Durban in July 1945, is really good and it’s really special to know he was on her at the time.

Wonderful, My late father Frank served on her as an airframe fitter and later as a petty officer. It was his only ship from the time she arrived in the UK until the very end. I had previously only seen one very grainy photo and to read her detailed service was very enlightening.

Thank you so much.
