My father, Roy Murrell, was on the Deersound. I believe he was an aircraft fitter. He was a Petty Officer. We have a photo of him and 3 others taken in Hongkong. One gentleman was army, one was airforce and was my godfather Hywel Jones and the other was a sailor. I don’t know their names but they were all from the Colwyn Bay Area. We also have a photo taken in Sydney with his fellow Petty Officer Jimmy?

He married my Mum in 1947. She was in the Wrens, based in Machrihanish, from Killamarsh Derbyshire.

My father, James Sidney Litchfield, served on the Deer Sound after serving on Carrier Furious on Arctic convoys. He was Engine Room Artificer but often referred to self as Leading Hand Stoker. He spent time in Australia with Deer Sound before returning to UK in 1946. I would be very grateful to hear from anyone with info about Deer Sound (or indeed Furious), however trivial it may appear. Thank you.

Oh my goodness, my father James (Jim) White was also a PO on the Deer Sound and was demobbed in Australia - possibly Fremantle too. He passed away just last week and I've been researching his life. He loved Australia and even considered staying there, having been offered a job and accommodation. So I'm sure they would've known each other... I wish I'd done this sooner and could've asked him. I'll ask my mother if she remembers him talking of your father. And if anyone else remembers my father, I'd love to know.

Thank you so much for adding details to my ageing memory. I remember the arrival date in Hong Kong, September 9,1945, because I had just about recovered from my 21st birthday celebrations on the 6th. I do recall gun fire being heard in the hills there. The official surrender was signed on September 15th I believe.Disappointing that the rumours of bullion being loaded at Freemantle were not confirmed. Most of us bought tinned fruit, sugar and other luxuries scarce at home during the war. Some of these items were rationed and the locals almost queued up to give us ration coupons. God bless the Aussies. Hong Kong was so unlike the modern version. A wreck of a city. We had a special mess, CDA ie Contagious disease ashore.
