In the 1960s this ship took hundreds of immigrants from Brazil to South Africa.

There were other ships taking skilled labour from South America to South Africa.

What is special about TJITJALENGKA is that my family travelled in it crossing the Atlantic from Santos habour in Sao Paulo, Brazil to Cape Town, South Africa.

It was not a pleasant trip. There were still endless rows of bunk beds in a dingy low deck with no privacy, crowded with men, women and children. Insects were everywhere. Those were the most miserable 15 days I had in my life. Thank goodness our going to South Africa made it worth the while.
